Trust, flexibility and an understanding of unique perspectives are all things nbkc strives to offer customers, but what about our employees?
The recent pandemic has taught the financial industry a lot about how institutions can adapt and evolve to meet the needs of employees. At the start of the pandemic, only 29 percent of financial service institution employees reported that they worked remotely at least once a week – that number has since increased to 69 percent.
Reluctance to return to in-office work isn’t exclusive to the financial or banking industry, but we’re taking the opportunity to create a flexible workflow that lasts. Since stay-at-home orders were enforced in March 2020, we shifted our workforce to a remote model, with the exception of our essential employees, and we haven’t looked back since.

Like so many other financial institutions, finding ways to adapt to remote bank work is ongoing at nbkc. But as one of Kansas City Business Journal’s Best Places to Work for the last five years, it seems as though we’ve got a few things right along the way.
We take a lot of pride in having created a culture that’s inviting. A large part of that is creating spaces that nurture communication and collaboration— while supporting our employees as they create a life outside of work that’s also inspiring. Here are a few of the ways we do just that.
Flexible schedules
Our Flex First program offers remote, hybrid, and in-office work opportunities. Collaborating with their managers, employees create a schedule that meets business needs and strikes the right work-life balance for them.
Inspiring work environments
Not to toot our own horn here, but our offices are pretty cool.
We’re talking on-site gyms to break a sweat, shuffleboards for brain breaks, and more. With a good majority of nbkc employees being located in the KC metro, you’re sure to be surrounded by good company.
For those employees working remote or on a hybrid schedule, nbkc offers a one-time home office stipend so you can create a space that’s functional and uniquely yours.
Prioritizing engagement
We know that replicating our in-person culture in a digital world can go a long way in boosting productivity, and nbkc is dedicated to finding solutions. By hosting virtual events and town hall meetings, sending engagement boxes to remote employees, and incorporating virtual collaboration tools, staying connected with the team is easy.
Stellar initiatives
Whether it’s helping employees create clearer work-life boundaries, hosting wellness seminars to combat burnout, or optimizing PTO policies, nbkc looks for ways to keep work and life balanced. Check out a few of the initiatives that make working at nbkc so sweet:
